William Douglas is about twenty years old, a solid, athletic-looking young man from 1450. He loves hunting and fighting and sports and his best friend James. He keeps the king safe and when he's Earl of Douglas, they'll rule Scotland together.

That was the plan, anyway. It turns out that when kings and earls grow up things change.

Flashback to when he and Jamie were a few years younger:

WILLIAM: When we're grown we can learn killing. I'm nearly grown. Till then what you need to do when they're crazy like this is just stay somewhere quiet. Stay out of sight till morning. It's nearly always alright by then.

They never kill the wee bairns.

Well, they might kill you because you're King but you'll be fine here with me. They won't find you.

JAMES: There was all blood... on the floor.

WILLIAM: Did you see how they killed them?

JAMES: No.

WILLIAM: Did you not look? We need to look. A fighting man needs to be fit for that. See when my father finds out what I can do? We'll be warriors, wee Jamie. We'll rule this country like roaring lions.

JAMES: I don't want to do that.

WILLIAM: Aye, you do. I'll help you. You sleepy? Aye, it takes you like that. If you see a beating or take a beating. Makes me doze like a dog in the sun. You just sleep, wee King. I'll take first watch. You're fine here with me.
